2013: All The Bold And Beautiful Street Style Stars At The
Annual Music Festival (PHOTOS)
The MTV Video Music Awards wasn't
the only thing poppin' in Brooklyn this past weekend. An
estimated 30,000 people turned out for the 8th annual AfroPunk Fest.
The two-day festival, which took place in Commodore Barry
Park, is touted as "the other black experience" and
celebrates a wide range of music (punk, hip hop, rap, pop,
reggae, indie rock, etc) -- along with fashion and food.
The festival's organizer, Jocelyn Cooper, summed it up nicely to Here & Now radio
station: "We
describe AfroPunk as a free space for African Americans —
and anyone else who wants to come onto that space — to just
be who they are, and not being defined by monolithic
definition of what, sort of, the outside culture puts on us
as African American people."
Attendees got to rock out to performances by Jada Pinkett Smith and her
rock band Wicked Wisdom, hip hop legend Prince Paul and
those super cute punk-rocking 6th graders from Unlocking The Truth, just
to name a few. And where there are dope beats, there always
seems to be style stars.
Bold prints, vibrant colors and eccentric accessories are
just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to AfroPunk
fashion (Solange
would be proud).
Individual style reigns supreme with bold and beautiful
folks everywhere you turn. And considering the festival's
name, there were plenty of Afros and
naturalistas on hand.
