Violence descended on Wall Street Saturday - but, thankfully, Batman was there to save the day.

Shots rang out at the corner of Wall and William Sts. - just blocks from the Zuccotti Park protests — but the gunfire was just part of the filming of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the latest film starring the Caped Crusader.

The movie, which is set to be released next summer, set up shop downtown and filmed a spectacular action scene.

Gotham City cops and a group of rebels clashed on the street, exchanging fake gunfire at the behest of an assistant director.

"Disperse, disperse now or you will be fired upon," the assistant shouted, as “Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan looked on.

Fake snow and thick smoke choked the air as the Gotham cops tried to fight off the ragamuffin mob. Several of the cops fell over during the fight, apparently wounded or killed.

More than 1,000 extras clogged the Financial District’s streets, many of them dressed in grungy attire that would not have looked out of place among the Occupy Wall Street protestors.

The scene was filmed over and over in front of scores of onlookers eager to catch a glimpse of the action and “Dark Knight” star Christian Bale, who was due on set late in the day.

“The Dark Knight Rises,” the third Batman movie helmed by Nolan, has been filming downtown for several days and is expected to shoot in the city for another two weeks, according to an official at the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting.

Signs have billed the production as “Magnus Rex” in a feeble effort to keep the shooting a secret, but the presence of three camouflaged Batmobile-style tanks provided a clue as to which blockbuster was being filmed.

Signs were posted in the area warning residents that fake gunfire was being used in the scene. The shots are much quieter than real gunfire, according to the official from the mayor’s office.

The movie, which also stars Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon—Levitt and Tom Hardy, has also filmed in Pittsburgh and Newark.
